Dr. Sybil Sharvelle is an Assistant Professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department with expertise in biological waste processing. She attended the University of Colorado for her B.S. and M.S. degrees. She received her doctoral degree from Purdue University, where she developed a biological processor for treatment of graywater for potable reuse during long duration space missions. Through this project, Dr. Sharvelle gained extensive experience in the area of water reuse and closed loop recycling of resources. This experience has led to her current interest in sustainable development concepts for water and wastewater management. She is now leading a project funded by the Water Environment Research Foundation to examine the long term effects of applying graywater for household landscape. Dr. Sharvelle is also investigating the potential to implement decentralized, integrated water management as a means of sustainable urban development. Her research interests expand to sustainable practices for agriculture and she is a core member of the CSU Institute for Livestock and Environment. Along this line, Dr. Sharvelle is interested in the application of technologies to capture and utilize biogas generated during treatment of animal wastes.
